उस वक्त डॉ. बाबासाहेब अम्बेडकर को एल.एल.डी. उपाधि प्रदान की गई।
कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय के 6 हजार आठ सौ अड़तालीस पदवीधारक थे। वे सब सत्रह स्कूलों और कॉलेजों के छात्र थे। डॉ. बाबासाहेब के बाद कनाडा सरकार के विदेश विभाग के सचिव आयु. पीवरसन और आयु. डैनियल मोंकेंट फ्रांस के सुप्रसिद्ध साहित्य इतिहासकार का भी सम्मान किया गया। उनके अलावा और आठ अमेरिकी नागरिकों को सम्मानित किया गया। इस अवसर पर सैंकड़ों लोग उपस्थित थे। पिछले एक सौ अठ्ठानब्वे सालों से विश्वविद्यालय अस्तित्व में था। ऐसे सुअवसर पर डॉ. बाबासाहेब को विशेष रूप से स्वागत किया गया। उपाधि प्रदान करते और उनका सम्मान करते समय कहा गया कि वे भारत के एक प्रमुख नागरिक हैं, विश्वविख्यात समाजसुधारक, सामाजिक क्रांति के पुरोआ और मानवीय हकों के लिए संघर्षरत वीर हैं। तब लोगों ने तालियों की गड़गड़ाहट की। ख्4,
डॉक्टर ऑफ लॉज इस उपाधि का साइटेशन लैटिन और अंगेजी इन दो भाषाओं में था। यह साइटेशन 5 जून को विश्वविद्यालय के वाइस प्रेसिडेंट एंड प्रोवोस्ट ग्रेसन कर्क ने समारोह के भव्य सभापंडाल में पढ़ कर सुनाया जो इस प्रकार था-
