observing this breach of Government orders under their very nose. The untouchable satyagrahis however began to try to enter in batches of three. But the police singled them out and prevented them from approaching even the doors, while the touchables were freely allowed to goinlargenumbers asbefore. The police even handles the satyagrahis very roughly and some were kicked and harassed in various ways to produce terrifying effect. Seeing this unexpected and unwarranted turn in the hitherto neutral policy of the Government, the untouchable leaders Messrs ; Gaikwad, Rankhambe and Dani offered satyagraha and got themselves arrested. The District Magistrate, Mr. Brown appeared on the scene at this stage. It was then observed that the police began to prevent even touchable males from entering the temple, allowing only the touchable females to go. Seeing this change in the police tactics the untouchables brought their lady volunteers on the scene to offer satyagriha. They also met with the same fate. The police did not scruple atall in treating the untouchable women with scanty courtesy. By twelve noon when the pujaris closed the doors of the temple as the Ram Janma Ceremony was over, 14 females and 20 males of untouchables were arrested.
The untouchables were never flattered themselves with the hope of getting any active assistance from the Government in the course of their fight for their human rights. But hitherto they were thankful to the Government for maintaining the balances even. They were rather disagreeably surprised to-day to see this change in the Government policy. Itis no wonder if they felt to-day that the British Government was Suspended for the time being and that the rule of the caste Hindus prevailed. In trying to account for this change, one may venture a guess of the possibility of Mr. Brown, the District Magtt. being led astray by his subordinates having a definite Sanatanic turn of mind. It may noted here that Mr. Brown who has taken charge of his office only recently.
