केला. त्याप्रसंगी त्यांनी नामदार शास्त्री यांना एक पत्र लिहिले होते व ते पत्र मुंबईच्या टाईम्स ऑफ इंडियाच्या ता. १९ जुलै सन १९१८ च्या अंकात प्रसिद्ध झाले होते. त्या पत्रातील एक उतारा आम्ही खाली देत आहोत,
"| cannot however, conclude my observations without stating what | consider, to be the means of enforcing our opinion whatever shape it may finally take. | entirely endorse concluding remarks of the authors of the historic documents that thousands of Indian reformers are to-day study- ing with avidity : “if anything could enter the sense of responsibility under which our recomendations are made, in a matter fraught with conse- quences so immense, it would be the knowledge that even as we are bringing our report to an end, far greater issues still hang in the balance upon the battle-field of France. It is there and not in Dehli or White Hall that the ultimate decision of India’s future willbe taker.” May God grant us home-rules, the wisdom to see this simple truth! The gate-way to on freedom is situated on tne French soil. No victory worth has yet been won without the shedding of blood. If we could but crowd the battle- fields of France with an indomitable army of home-rules fighting for victory for the cause of the Allies, it will also be a fight far our own cause. We could then have made out an unanswerable case for the granting of home-rule not any distant time or near future but immediately. My advice, therefore, to the country would be, fight unconditionally unto death with the Britain forthe victory, and agitate simultaneously also unto oath, if we must, for reforms that we deserve. This is the surest method of gaining an honourable victory for ourselves over the strongest oppo- sition of bureaucratic forces, and at the end of it there would be no ill-will left. It may not be impossible to gain our end by sheer obstructive and destructive agitation. But it is easy enough to see that we shall at the same time reap ill-will between fhe British and the Indian elements, not a particularly cohesive cement, for binding would be partners.”
“है पत्र पुरे करण्यापूर्वी, आपल्या मागण्यांना अखेर जे स्वरूप यावयाचे असेल ते येवो, पण त्या मागण्या मान्य करण्यास भाग पाडण्याचा माझ्यामते सर्वोत्तम मार्ग कोणता, हे सांगणे जरूर आहे. हिंदी राजकीय क्षेत्रातील सहस्त्रावधी कार्यकर्ते राजकीय सुधारणांच्या ज्या ऐतिहासिक मसुद्याचे आज उत्सुकतेने मनन करीत आहेत तो मसुदा तयार करणारांनी शेवटी जो निष्कर्ष काढला आहे तो मला सर्वतोपरी संमत आहे. ज्या योजनेचे परिणाम इतके मोठे होणार आहेत की त्यांची आज कल्पनाही करता येत नाही त्या योजनेविषयी शिफारशी करताना आमच्यावरील जबाबदारीची जाणीव असूनही एका कारणामुळे आमचे मन साशंक होत आहे. ते कारण म्हणजे आमचा अहवाल पुरा होण्यापूर्वीच हिंदी राजकीय सुधारणेच्या प्रश्नापेक्षा अधिक गंभीर असे प्रश्न फ्रान्सच्या रणांगणावर सोडविले
